Breaking into publishing can be tricky. It can be difficult to get noticed by editors and literary agents against what is often fierce competition.
Yet, these days, it has never been easier to self-publish your tome. Self-publishing using platforms like Kindle, Amazon and ePub can be just as lucrative – and sometimes even more lucrative – than traditional publishing routes.
Here are some notable self-publishing success stories:
‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ by E.L. James
This was originally self-published as an e-book and by print-on-demand paperback. It went on to become a global bestseller, leading to a traditional publishing deal and a major film adaptation in 2015.
‘The Martian’ by Andy Weir
This book was first published chapter by chapter on Weir’s blog.
After gaining popularity, it was self-published as an e-book. Eventually, it was picked up by a major publisher and adapted into a successful film starring Matt
Damon.
‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ by Robert Kiyosaki
This self-help book was self-published in 1997. It subsequently gained a huge following, leading to traditional publishing deals and a successful book series.
‘Legally Blonde’ by Amanda Brown
Legally Blonde was self-published in 2001 and caught the attention of a major publisher. It was adapted into a popular film starring Reece Witherspoon in the same year, and is now a successful Broadway musical.
Whatever genre of publication you have up your sleeve, following a self-publishing route can turn your oeuvre into a success story.
