With the leaves starting to fall as we enter autumn, those on a paleo diet are in for plenty of treats. While the “hunter gatherer diet” has a cornucopia of ingredients available to make tasty meals all year round, autumn is blessed with a bounty of produce at it best.
For autumn, paleo diet experts encourage pairing root vegetables with seasonal fruits and enjoying them with leaner meats to support a healthy lifestyle. For snacking, nuts and seeds are ideal, and healthy fats are advised for cooking like olive and coconut oil.
Fall season foods include flavourful sweet potatoes, parsnips, yams, turnips, rutabaga and carrot, but also an abundance of green vegetables like kale, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. Squashes also come into season in autumn, allowing paleo chefs to add warm golden colours to their plate with acorn and butternut squashes.
For fruit, autumn brings crisp pears and apples, but with its sweet and honey-like notes, persimmons are another excellent choice. Peak apple picking season in the UK is late September into October, while pears are harvested throughout autumn and into winter.
Protein is essential for every health paleo diet, and autumn has plenty of choice on offer. Eggs are an excellent source all year round, but chefs will also find grass-fed lamb and beef available, along with chicken, salmon and trout.
