For those who are looking to get into shape this summer holiday season, a move to a paleo way of eating can be a great way to kick-start a healthy regime.
Summer might be the perfect time to make the switch – the warmer months often call for lighter meals full of seasonal fruit and vegetables, with processed carbs that leave you feeling heavy and bloated featuring less on the menu.
Tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries, melons, and fresh nuts are all at their best at this time of year. These paleo foods, when accompanied by fresh fish, shellfish, and lean meats such as turkey and chicken, make for a perfect summer menu.
Paleo diets have weight loss benefits because they help you to cut out the processed sugars found in sweets, soft drinks, bread, and pastries. The naturally occurring sugars found in legumes and pulses are associated with bloating and lethargy too, so cutting these out improves the bacteria of the digestive tract and makes you feel lighter and more energetic.
Eating less refined (heavily processed) foods reduces spikes in blood sugar levels, which makes it easier to control your hunger, eat only when you are hungry, and not to over-eat. Cutting out processed foods is also associated with improved sleep. Sleep is the foundation of our wellbeing, so you could soon find the benefits of paleo eating seeping into other areas of your life, such as your health, performance at work, and relationships with those you live with – as well as your holiday photos.
