The modern paleo diet is made up of foodstuffs that people would hunt and gather around 10,000 years ago.
Vegetables, fruit, fish, lean meats, seeds, nuts and eggs are all included while dairy, grains and legumes are excluded. With its origins of finding substance in the wild, outdoor paleo dining makes perfect sense, and an early autumn picnic provides the ideal opportunity.
Whether you’re trying a paleo diet for the first time or introducing friends and family to its merits, an alfresco experience is a great place to start. While the weather cools in early autumn, the combination of gentle breezes and colourful scenery provides an excellent environment for a picnic.
To enjoy a paleo picnic, pack seasonal produce sliced up like apples, carrots, bell peppers, celery and grapes, and consider dates for a high-fibre and low glycaemic treat. However, you don’t have to be limited to finger foods.
Fresh soups made from autumn favourites like pumpkin, parsnips, and chestnuts can be kept warm in a thermos on chillier days, but fall salads can also present paleo perfection. Shred cabbage and Brussels sprouts to make a slaw and add dried walnuts, cranberries and apples for a healthy bowl and lace it with honey-mustard dressing.
For a protein-rich fix, braise some lean chicken in autumn apple cider before your picnic and serve up drumsticks and wings that are easy to eat.
